Progressive profiling is the practice of collecting customer data incrementally across multiple interactions rather than asking for everything upfront. It reduces friction at the point of join and increases data completeness over time.

The principle

Ask for what you need now, and earn the right to ask for more later. At the moment of joining, the minimum viable profile is name + email (or phone). Everything else — date of birth, address, size preferences, style preferences — can be gathered through subsequent touchpoints:
  • Account completion prompts in Profile Portal
  • Post-purchase surveys
  • Incentivised profile completion (e.g., “Complete your profile for 10% off”)
  • Staff capture in Clienteling during a fitting or consultation

What to capture at join

Minimum (required):
  • First and last name
  • Email address or mobile phone (at least one)
  • Comms opt-in confirmation
Nice to have at join:
  • Date of birth (enables birthday reward)
  • Preferred location (enables local store comms)
Save for later:
  • Size and appearance attributes
  • Detailed comms preferences
  • Secondary contact details

Incentivising profile completion

A common approach is to make certain incentives conditional on profile completeness:
  • Issue a birthday reward only when a date of birth is on file
  • Unlock a “complete profile” benefit after all key fields are filled
  • Use Omneo reactions to trigger a prompt when a field is missing

Data quality vs quantity

A smaller set of accurate, consented data is more valuable than a large set of stale or incorrectly captured data. Train staff to capture data carefully rather than quickly.
