# Currencies

> The Omneo Currencies extension supplies exchange rates: it converts incoming Transactions to your base currency, prices cross-region tier points, and records a daily market rate on your currency pairs.

The Omneo Currencies extension is Omneo's own exchange rate service. It does not connect to a partner platform. It reads published foreign exchange rates and puts them where your tenant needs them. It does three jobs, and your tenant can use any of them on its own.

## Transaction conversion

When a Transaction arrives in a currency other than your base currency, the extension looks up the exchange rate for the day the Transaction happened and records it on the Transaction as a `currency_values` entry, together with the converted total. Reactions can wait for that entry before they issue loyalty, so points and tier points are always earned on a converted amount. ## Live rates

Omneo asks the extension for the current rate whenever it needs one and you have not configured a fixed rate:

* Issuing tier points with `tier-point.create.with.region` when the Transaction's region differs from the Profile's region.
* Re-pricing a Profile's tier points when the Profile moves to a region with a different currency.
* Showing spend figures in Omneo Clienteling in the store's local currency.

## Daily market rates

Once a day, the extension records the latest market rate on each currency pair your tenant holds, as the pair's `market_rate`. A pair set to use the market rate converts at it from then on. A pair on a manual rate keeps converting at that rate, and the market rate sits beside it for reference. See [Daily market rates](/extensions/currencies/market-rates).

## What the extension does not do

The extension only supplies rates. It does not convert point balances, Rewards or Credits itself, and it does not change a Profile's region or currency. Omneo does the arithmetic using the rate the extension supplies, as described in [Localisation](/concepts/profiles/localisation). The extension also does not create currency pairs for the daily market rate. It only updates pairs you already hold.
