# Currency and Region Extensions

> How Omneo sources the exchange rates that multi-region tenants convert Transactions, tier points and currency pairs with.

Currency and region extensions supply the exchange rates a multi-region tenant needs. Omneo already models regions, currencies and currency pairs (see [Localisation](/concepts/profiles/localisation)). These extensions keep the rates behind them current and record them where loyalty can use them.

## Omneo Currencies

The Omneo Currencies extension is Omneo's own exchange rate service. It works in three ways:

* **Transaction conversion.** A Transaction in a foreign currency gains a `currency_values` entry holding the rate for its day and the converted total, and Reactions can wait for it before issuing loyalty.
* **Live rates.** Cross-region tier points, region switches and Omneo Clienteling ask it for today's rate when no fixed rate is configured.
* **Daily market rates.** Each currency pair's `market_rate` is refreshed once a day, and pairs set to `use_market_rate` convert at it.

## Fixed or market rates

| Approach | Where it is configured | Suits |
| - | - | - |
| Market rates | Daily market rates, with `use_market_rate` on the pair | Figures that should follow the market |
| Manual rates | `manual_rate` on each currency pair | A rate agreed with finance, changed deliberately |
| Fixed loyalty rates | `exchange_rates` on `tier-point.create.with.region`, or the `exchange_rates` tenant setting for region switches | Loyalty that must not move with the market |
